UN Releases Mahatma Gandhi Stamp on Oct 2. 2009 the 140th anniversary
The United Nations Postal Administration, the world body's postal agency, released the one-dollar stamp designed by a world famous Miami-based artist Ferdie Pacheco, seen here. The Collectible 1st day envelopes with the stamp and the UN seal were on sale.
On the International Day of Non-Violence, the United Nations has released a stamp of Mahathma Gandhi on the occasion of his 140th birth anniversary. The United Nations Postal Administration, the world body's postal agency, released the one-dollar stamp designed by a world famous Miami-based artist Ferdie Pacheco, with the Father of the Nation in red, blue and gold. Also the envelopes marked with the stamp and the United Nations' seal were on sale.
Several UN envoys, present at a function organised by the Indian Mission to celebrate his 140the birth anniversary, reiterated the influence of Mahathma Gandhi's life.
"In many ways, Mahatma Gandhi previsioned the UN. Much of the work that we do in the area of human rights owes its genesis in the struggle against racial discrimination, which he focused on," Hardeep Singh Puri India's ambassador to the UN said.
HAPPY DUSHERRA to all and its ALREADY HAPPY DIWALI (Deepawali) for SOME
After an extended Navaratri ( actually 9 days only) leading to the tenth day of DUS HERRA where the victory of Good over evil is celebrated as VIJAYDASHAMI all over India and in Indian origin households allover the globe, the fortnight before the Festoval of Lights DEEPAWALI begins.
The actual dates for Deepawali celebrated for 1000's of years falls this year on October 17th- actually couple days on either side as Deepawalo is a multi-days event.
However among the NRI's this is alone MORE cause for a party or Festival, if you will and already Diwali festivals are being celebrated.( ahead of actual time) There are various instances of Diwali, Navaratri being just another reason/cause to celebrate or raise funds etc rather than paying any attention to details and maintain authenticity and tradition ( sorely lacking)
  
The City of Cupertino held its Diwlai festival on September 26th- nearly 4 weeks Before the actual date!! and Hot dogs and links were available at th Diwali Fest. While this year the attendance was thinner because of the weather, at least the stage had mostly Indian culture oriented programs With the Cupertino FALL festival- a mainstream event of the city happenning a week earlier- perhaps the city elders will probably decide to consolidate (and water down) the Diwali festival- with the active help from Indian-Americans
Navaratris- 9 Days of heralding in VijayDashami or Dusherra are held haphazard on convienint days with some fundraising events vying to "be the first" Dandiya in the region. With not much care for details,, "party' is on the mind of people it seems. ONLY
The growing popularity of this event within ethnic Indians speaks volumes for how removed from culture many are- and they complain that their kids are moving away from being Indian??
This Navratri season 2009- in the SF Bay area,- still on going AFTER Dusherra, on a Saturday night recently ie Sept 26 (still Navaratri), there were about 3000 people dancing a Santa Clara Convention center, while across the street at Great America theme park the GCA_ guarati ultural assoc had about 1000 people and a mile away there were anothe 1000 people were at the Sunnyvale Temple abt a mile away and another non profit held a dance in nearby Palo Alto.!!
The DURGA PIJA is also celebrated with great fervor by the NRI community especially in the Bengali, Oriya, Telugu community in partiular. Once again in SF Bay area, there were no less than 5 (five) Durga Poojas= several on all 9 days leading to vijay or Bijoy Doshomi Pojo. Many in the community made a beeline to all the Pujos.
On an interesting note, the India Community Center (ICC), a secular institute till now- with recent Board quite against religion practice- seems to have opened up the cennter to spiriuality and religon with a vengance. The ICC actually had all 9 days and Dusherra pojas held at its site and several visiting Swamis and Gurus to the Bay area have conducted their discourses and poojas at ICC !. This was perhaps a direct result of poor fundraising, mismanagement and extravagant spending over the years by people and staff not connected or experienced in community development.
So While wishing Happy Dusherra to All Mayebe its Ok to wish all HAPPY DEEPAWALI as well!! Already
Tirupathi Ladoo awarded Geographic Copyright!
 Not that God's Offering or Prasad needs any Stamp of approval- but in the nature of todays world, the famous 'Tirupati laddoo' available at the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh has been awarded a GEOGRAPHICAL COPYRIGHT that bars others from naming or marketing the sweet preparation under the same name.
The Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams, a trust that administers the Venkateswara Temple in the Tirumala hills, had applied for Geographical Indication (GI) with the Chennai- based Geographical Indication Registry in March last year.
"The GI certificate for Tirupati Laddoo has been granted to the trust (TTD). The Laddoo is now protected under law and nobody can copy it," G L Verma, Asst Registrar of Trade Marks and GI, told PTI from Chennai.
Under the GI, the right to marketing a product is tied to a definite geographical territory and the manufactured goods should be produced or processed or prepared in that territory.
Other popular items that have been granted a GI tag world over include Champagne & Tequilla, etc. The index award helps in preventing others from exploiting a brand name that has evolved over a period of time and also provides legal protection a la Intellectual Property Rights.
Now for the 1000's of preparations of all corners of India like BANDAR LADOO, SANDESH and 1000's other eatables all related to regional cuisine and recognized for 1000's of years!!!! |

Water on the Moon Discovered by India's Chandraayan Satellite probe
YAY CONGRATSWater on the moon was always in the realm of possibility and India’s first lunar mission found evidence of large quantities of water on the moons surface. Data from Chandrayaan-1 also suggests that water is still being formed on the Moon. Scientists said the breakthrough would change the face of lunar exploration.The unmanned craft was equipped with NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper, designed specifically to search for water by picking up the electromagnetic radiation emitted by minerals. Early results from Nasa’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) recorded temperatures as low as -238C (minus  396.4F) in polar craters on the Moon, even colder than the surface of Pluto, and could mean that ice has been trapped for billions of years. The LRO has also detected an abundance of hydrogen, thought to be a key indicator of ice, at the poles. The other Nasa mission, the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), is due to crash a probe into a polar crater on October 9 in the hope of sending up a plume of ice that can be studied.

INDIAN SPACE RESEARCH ORGANIZATION LAUNCHES SEVEN SATELLITES in 1200 Seconds
The tried and tested PSLV C-14 rocket, was once again launched by the Indian Space Research Organization from Sriharikota off the southern coastal state of Andhra Pradesh, carried India's Ocean Monitoring Satellite Oceansat-2 remote sensing satellite and six smaller ones, for foreign clients All seven satellites were placed in orbit within a span of 1,200 seconds ( 10 mins). Of the six nano satellites, four are from Germany, one from Switzerland and one from Turkey. Oceansat-2, India's second satellite to study oceans and the interaction of oceans and atmosphere, is the 16th remote sensing satellite launced by India
ISRO's Tracking and Command Director S.K. Shivakumar announced a command center in Mauritius had picked up the signal from Oceansat-2 soon after it separated from the launch vehicle.
