By mid November, alredy 20 million votes have been coast! This in a global competition to name the NEW, MODERN SEVEN WONDERS of the World. The "New 7 Wonders of the World" campaign was begun in 1999 by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber, with almost 200 nominations coming in from around the world While the Pyramids of Egypt are the only ones left from the original Seven Wonders of the World, long gone are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon; the statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece; the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, both in present-day Turkey; the Colossus of Rhodes; and the Pharos lighthouse off Alexandria, Egypt. Those seven were deemed wonders in ancient times by observers of the Mediterranean and Middle East. The public can vote until July 6, by Internet or phone. The seven winners will be announced July 7 in Lisbon, Portugal. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, keeps updating its list of World Heritage Sites, which now totals 830 places. Some other nominees include the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, The Alhambra in Spain, the Pyramids of Giza; The Haghia Sophia mosque in Turkey; the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral; the Colosseum in Rome; the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany; Stonehenge; the Great Wall of China; Kiyomizu Temple in Japan; the Sydney Opera House; Angkor Wat temples; Timbuktu in Mali; Petra in Jordan; the Statue of Christ Redeemer in Brazil; Easter Island; and Chichen Itza, Mexico. |
