Last year 2009 saw an historic occasion, as the first US President  of African American descent took Oath and the office of the President of the United States - a day after the celebration of MLK day.    Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon:  He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957,  The 1963 March on Washington, with "I Have a Dream" speech is immortalized as the spech lives on and ionspires millions of people all over the world.
In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. He was assainated in 1968, while opposing the Vietnam War and focusing on poverty in the USA, He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986. Some US States like Arizona, Colorado are known for their opposition to this holiday, and racism while still prevelant in the US and practised by a few is looked down by lawmakers and most people in general.
On this day forward, in the midst of devestation in Haiti, let us remember the legacy iof this noble man and think on how we can help ALL humanity, forget petty differences and work unitedly in a people to people fashion to live and let live better lives

US CONGRESS PASSES A RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE MAHATMA GANDHI'S LEADERSHIP AND LEGACY of NON VIOLENCE
To commemoraate Mahatma Gandhi's 140th
birth anniversary in October 2009, a resolution has been introduced in the US House of Representatives to recognize Gandhi's 'visionary leadership that enhanced the rapidly deepening friendship between the United States and India.'
The resolution introduced by Ros-Lehtinen (Republican, Florida and co-sponsored by five co-lawmakers, including Rep. Jim McDermott (Democrat Washington) notes that Gandhi was 'a great political leader, devout and spiritual Hindu and leader of India's nationalist movement.'
The resolution said that all his life Gandhi courageously supported, and gave his life for, the cause of Hindu-Muslim amity and helped make India the largest democracy in the world.
The resolution introduced by Ros-Lehtinen, the first Hispanic woman and first Cuban-American elected to Congress in 1989, June 26, said that Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent civil disobedience has influenced people around the world for the betterment of mankind.
It noted  that Gandhiji developed the term satyagraha, meaning vindication of truth, not by inflicting suffering on others but through nonviolent and patient self-suffering and that his autobiography  'My Experiments with Truth' reveals the inner voic of one of history's most spiritual leaders.
Ros-Lehtinen's resolution that has been sent to the sub-committee on Foreign Affairs, noted that Gandhiji counseled the humankind to 'hate the sin, and love the sinner' and urged people everywhere to 'be the change you want to see in the world' and reminded the world that 'freedom is not worth having if it does not connote the freedom to err.'"
Noting that as a result of his timeless legacy, Gandhi's name has come to symbolize freedom and justice around the world, the resolution urged the House to recognize the 140th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and commend "Gandhi's unique and lasting role in the establishment of India and its democratic institutions which will be revered for generations to come."

Gandhi Auction Sam Rao Indian-American Sam RaoGandhiji Treasure Items Bought by Liquor Baron
Dekh Tere Sansaar me kya hogaya Bhagwan itna Badal Gaya Insaan
Recently a peace activist who had encountered Gandhiji and a;sp acquired some of Gandhiji's items decided to sell the items in a Sotheby Auction.  While the items were to fetch a decnt sum for helping more 'Peace Efforts' by the activists, a massive PR campaign and Media leaks- made sure that the price was driven up.
With The Givernment of India getting sucked in or should we say suckered in- the bidding was bound to go HIGH!!!  Especially when India's Prime Minister ManMohan Gandhi deputed the Minister of Cultural Affairs Ms Ambika Soni to ensure the dafety of IIndia's Heritage etc...
Gandhi Auction Sam Rao Indian-American Sam RaoGandhi Auction Sam Rao Indian-American Sam Rao
.. So in a not too well concealed move(s), Couple of NRI's bid in this auction- which also saw anonymous bids from  overseas!!
Some of the luminiaries bidding for the auction items included VIJAY MALLAYA The Liquor Baron- Kingfisher and kingfisher Airlines etc and also SANT CHATWAL= businessman and hotelier and ex "associate" of State Bank of India etc
The final result, the items fetched a whopping $1.2 Million or something which would have fetched perhaps $100,000!!!
The Irony is that a LIQUOR BARON - A MAN WHO MADE MONEY by SELLING LIQUOR BOUGHT GANDHI JIS ITEMS!!
Dr Mallaya is Im sure a nice guy but the irony shouldnt ne lost on observors.
PS The Peace activist had earlier offered the same items to Govt of India in return for a promise that the annual budget would be increased for Welfare of poor and Peace and Non violent Studies and initiatives! But I guess from GOI Point of View $1.2 Million is better than $50 billion by this deal!!!!

CHEERS!! (pun Intended)  and WHERE WAS MUNNA BHAI WHEN YOU NEEDED HIM!!!

Jan 30 Martin Luther King Jr Day 2009  50th Anniversary
martin Luther king jr Indian american sam RaoAn historic occasion especially this year of 2009, as the first US President  of African American descent takes office a day after the celebration of MLK day.   With a bruising elections concluding in November 4th 2009, not too long ago quite a fw people –including Democrats- were still voicing their doubts and reservations if Obama would be able to pull it off in the finals!
But with Cheney-Bush legacy hard to escape, John McCain compounded by bringing in Sarah Palin and her folksy ( try trailer park) style  and the GOP imploded.
Wonder MLK in his wildest dreams imagined such a scenario- although visionaries like him have to be commended for setting a pace that is based on Good- Truth and Best for Humanity.
President Barrack Obama has brought Hope, Change and an Upliftment of peoples’ aspirations- all the spirit and

OCT 2: MAHATMA GANDHI's BIRTHDAY
This Day  to be celebrated and Remembered as

NONVIOLENCE & PEACE DAY
Gandhi ~www.indian-american.org
Seems more relevant everyday- to at least absorb Some of the message of NonViolence and Peace!
Too bad even within the Indian Community esp in USA there is hardly a ripple on recognizing and celebrating this legacy of Gandhi- which is Non violence, Peace and Tolerance- inspired by ancient Indian Heritage and Civilazational values.
(None of the self syled torch bearers of the Indian community are really doing anything with a priority and motivated effort!...Here I am talking abt the "leaders who celebrate with Festivals and Modern Songs and Dance of  India ant a drop of a hat and Celebrate "Bollywood" Movie actresses etc- These type people & organizations)!!

With mere "pop culture"  being recognized and celebrated - and that too a  MERE Mimicing of Westernized youth Hip Hop Culture by kids ; the wonderful lessons of an ancient Civilization of India AND the Legacies - which have resulted ie Nonviolence, Peace, and given rise to people like Gandhi and subsequent teachings etc - are lost.
Esp. as even the landed 1st generation Indian-Americans doing very little to inclucate and promote such values of Peace, Nonviolence and Tolerance in the youth

If you look around- especially in USA -except for prayer meeting in couple of Temples- hardly any of the"Community Organizations" are doing any activity on Gandhi

The folks who ARE celebrating are too far in between.
And Here's wishing THEM & Saluting THEM  today- - and to announce
"Every Day is a DAY OF NON VIOLENCE & PEACE" (SR)
