Mk Gandhi district houston samrao.com Indian AmericanJANUARY 26, 2010 HOUSTON NAMES A DISTRICT AS  MAHATMA GANDHI DISTRICT
As this year 2010 marks the 141 st Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, The City of Greater Houston has honored him by naming a district area after him.
Houston and the district is home to a large number of Indians and the comunity was also recognized by the  Mayor of Greater Houston Annise Parker. The event in South Western part of Houston, TX was attended by a large number of Indian Americans  and also the Consul General India Sanjiv Arora
Although there was a move to name a designated area as :Little India' - that move did not pan out and after a compromise, the leaders of the community including the India Cultural center (ICC) of Houston dcided to rename the district with singns demarcating the MAHATMA GANDHI DISTRICT,.  The cost of signs are about $100,000
Though symbolic, such gestures makes a lot of sense and welcomes immigrants to believe that America belongs to them and They are welcomed by america - by recognizing the contributions, the culture and accepting their identity

President Obama on India's Republic Day Jan 26, 2010- Official statement
I send my warmest wishes on behalf of the American people to the people of India and to those here in America and around the world who are celebrating Republic Day. As the world’s largest democracies, the United States and India have a strong shared... belief in the values of liberty, pluralism, and religious tolerance.
This Republic Day is particularly special because it marks India’s Diamond Jubilee. In the sixty years since the Indian Constitution was adopted, we have built a strong and vibrant partnership. I was pleased that Prime Minister Singh was the honored guest for the first state dinner of my Presidency. It was a chance to celebrate the great and growing partnership between our two Nations, and the friendship between our peoples. Indeed, the more than two million Indian Americans in the United States enrich every corner of our great nation – leading in government, science, industry and the arts. And as our peoples continue to build upon that friendship, let our governments continue to work together to advance peace, prosperity, and stability around the globe.

Since PM Singh's visit to Washington DC, this is the first visit by a top official of the Obama adminstration.

We will discuss ways to deepen the current and look for new areas of trade and cooperation. We will also discuss regional security issues" Major Maureen Schmuann, spokesperson, US department of defense said.
The region has only India standing tall as a strong, vibrant Democratic Republic, with Paksiatan- and Islamic republic, totalitarian China, troubled Afghanisatan, emergin Sril lanka- after a bloddy civil war, Maoists presence in Nepal as the neighbors. As a natiural ally of USA and with an economic engine running powerfullly, India remains a strong ally in all aspects for like minded countries to engage. India also has  15% Muslim population, the majority of whom are culturally Indian and remain engaged in civil society and are against Islamic fundamentalism.  This aspect also  needs to be strengthened and encouraged as a role model.

martin Luther king jr Indian american sam RaoThis NonViolenct Advocate and Champion of the Poor and Civil rights was a World Leader who still inspires many martin Luther king jr gandhi Indian American sam Raomillions around the whole world.
His fight and legacy made it possible for many people of color and disdadvantage to hold their head high in American scoiety including all immigrants. Such a person who embodied Non Violent Positive Change and an Upliftment of peoples aspirations-
would be proud of the Chosen one - President Barrack Obama and family as we all should be.

Last year 2009 saw an historic occasion, as the first US President  of African American descent took Oath and the office of the President of the United States - a day after the celebration of MLK day.    Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon:  He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957,  The 1963 March on Washington, with "I Have a Dream" speech is immortalized as the spech lives on and ionspires millions of people all over the world.
In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. He was assainated in 1968, while opposing the Vietnam War and focusing on poverty in the USA, He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986. Some US States like Arizona, Colorado are known for their opposition to this holiday, and racism while still prevelant in the US and practised by a few is looked down by lawmakers and most people in general.
On this day forward, in the midst of devestation in Haiti, let us remember the legacy iof this noble man and think on how we can help ALL humanity, forget petty differences and work unitedly in a people to people fashion to live and let live better lives
