Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s anniversary observed in SF Bay Area

Sunnyvale, C.A.: The birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, known as “Iron Man of Indiaâ€, was celebrated on Oct. 31 in Sunnyvale.
Along with a small altar of Sardar Patel, a display of books, socialization, followed by a screening of the movie Sardar, directed by Ketan Mehta, was the fare of the day. Several visitors browsed through old posters and books on Sardar Patel’s life and works, which described the leadership, determination and unwavering patriotism of this great statesman of India.
Sardar Patel was born on Oct. 13, 1875 in Karamsad village in Gujarat and rose through the ranks to become a hard-working leader in the Congress party, alongside Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru. “We want to encourage and target youth now, as there are lessons to be learnt from the life of Sardar Patel,†said organizer Dinu Amin.
Senior citizens Gordhan Patel and Janubhai Patel also spoke in similar veins, “We are from the same village (Karamsad) as Sardar Patel, and were youth volunteers during his visits during India’s freedom struggle of India. His speeches inspired all of us, and we want his life to inspire youth of
present time.â€
Nancy Smith, chairperson of Commission of Housing and Human Affairs (Sunnyvale), was pleased pay homage to Sardar Patel, “It’s great to pay respects to strong leaders and also promote role models to our youth. I am happy to have participated, especially at the invitation of fellow commissioner Narendra Pathak.â€
Following the movie “Sardar†starring Paresh Rawal several community leaders of SF Bay area such as Sandeep Panwala, Chandru Bhambra, Chandrika Patel and others pledged plans for a much larger programs on next anniversary of Sardar Patel. Altogether 200 people attended this Sardar Patel Jayanti organized by Dinu Amin, Sandeep Panwala, Naren Pathak and others. This was the first time this event was organized in the area.
