About 200 people gathered on Nov. 21 at the Sunnyvale
Hindu Temple to protest the recent arrest of the Shankaracharaya of
Kanchi Kamakoti Pitham, Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal. The meeting
organized by the Hindu Swayam Sevak (HSS) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad
(VHP) of Bay Area, was largely attended by members of various parties,
including FISI, OFBJP, HSS and VHP.
The proceedings began with bhajans by Swaranjali Bhajan Sangh group
followed by a series of speakers like Sundar Vedaraman of Sankara Eye
Foundation (SEF).
“His Holiness would not hurt a fly. All this mischief was done
by
politics, especially since Swamigal was involved in changing the
Brahmin dominated system of the Mutt and helping Dalits and backward
castes,†Sundar said. He further said that Swamigal had
received
several death threats because of his zeal for social reform.
Suresh Patel, local hotelier associated with several cultural
organizations, spoke about the pain felt by the Hindu community
everywhere by the arrest of the Shankaracharya.
Sudarshan Rao,visiting professor of Warangal University in the Indian
state of Andhra Pradesh, urged Hindus to unite in the face of assault
on Hinduism by “global forces.â€
Nandalal Jotwani, editor of Swadesh Patrika, urged all Hindus to
support VHP leader Ashok Singhal in protesting the arrest of the
Shankaracharya.
Community leaders also resolved to lead a delegation of Hindus to the
Indian consulate in San Francisco to voice the outrage of the Hindu
community in the Bay Area.
A resolution registering the protest against the action was also
passed.
